Things to avoid when writing (research papers)

A) Generalization

Don't generalize -take them all out

Ex: "In America" "All teens on social media"'

-If you didn’t see it in a source- don’t have it

B) Independent clauses

"Lisa ate waffles, Kevin ate pancakes. <----- comma splice

-you can join them with a period or you can add a conjunction (for and nor but or yet so)

-you have to have a comma and a conjunction

-do not use a comma

-you could use a semicolon

C) Passive vs Active Voice *don’t use passive voice

Active voice- clear subject verb

{Passive- Waffles were eaten.

Active- Lisa ate waffles.}

D) Subordinate Conjunctions

-"subject verb" sentence structure gets boring

Subordinate Conjunctions

As

After

Although

While

When

Until

Before

Because

If

Since

(so)

E) Quote Mechanics

Kevin said, "Pancakes are delicious." (42)

F) Works Cited vs Bibliography

*you need a works cited for this project

Don’t start paper frontloading with research

*start with something interesting

Text analysis

A) Description

What

B)Analyze

Who

When

Where

Why

C)function how?

Then tie it back to the community

****do not summarize in the conclusion***

Point ppl in a new direction outside of your paper
