I remember being very young and being inside of Kroger, (which is a grocery store comparable to Publix for those who do not live in the south) and walking past the seafood section of the store. I never liked walking past this section because 1. I hate any type of seafood, and 2. I hated the smell. It always smelled so bad and it often was so strong that it usually made me feel a bit sick. But I remember walking by and seeing all the live crabs with their claws taped shut and I remember thinking it was a bit odd. I remembered wondering why there were such strange creatures alive in the grocery store. To some extent, I think I had not at that point, realized that they were going to be sold for people to eat. I guess I just simply thought that they were there for show. When you think about it, it does seem a bit terrible that a lot of crabs are eaten that way, by being boiled alive, but at the same time I feel like most animals are slaughtered in the same manner, we just do not see it, which makes it feel like it is somehow better. For me, this seems like another problem that isn’t ever going to be fixed. Humans have eaten meat since the beginning and they will continue to.
